fence progress

We had such a great week here.  It’s been sunny and The New Farm is changing right in front of our eyes!

Fencing has been going in all week!  My schedule for work and chores has been tiring.  I’ve been getting online to work at my off-farm job around 5:30 AM so that when the fence gang has questions I can take breaks to talk to them and still get a full day’s work in.  So I’ve been working from 5:30 to around 7:30 and then catching up with the fence crew and doing chores, and then back to work until around 3?  I am usually up that early anyway, but the brain power needed to switch back and forth has been tiring.

All together we are having about a mile of fencing installed.  The 4 acre field, the big pasture, and the barnyard are being fenced, and also the road frontage in front of the house will have some very fancy board fencing.  This is pretty similar to the amount of fencing we installed at the old farm, so we’ve been down this road before.  The company who did that fencing didn’t return any of my calls for this project so we hired a local, Amish owned company.

I don’t really know anything about Amish people except maybe… quilts?  Our immediate neighbors are Amish (I think) and they seem lovely.  And let me tell you... The Christmas Cookies!

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this crew has been really wonderful.  As a female farm operator, I have been talked down to more times than I can count by well-meaning (and some not so well-meaning) male counterparts, so I am always a little leery when meeting men in my capacity as The Boss of This Farm.  (Once, I told Chris I didn’t want his opinion on a paint color because “I am the boss of this house”.  I stormed out of the room quickly in order to avoid further discussion).  I haven’t felt any of that kind of nonsense from these guys!  I have loved having them around and clearly they are a group of perfectionists.  So far I am really happy!  I may have a reputation for never being happy with anything, so this is kind of a big deal.

I have no brainpower left to write, so please enjoy these photos from around the farm this week!
